How much electricity does the kiln use?
Our kiln has a power rating of 2.3 kW, meaning it can use up to 2.3 kilowatt-hours (kWh) of electricity per hour when heating.
E = P \times t
Where:
-
E = Energy used (kWh)
-
P = Power (kW)
-
t = Time (hours)
What does it cost to run?
The exact cost depends on your electricity rate. In New Zealand, electricity is typically around $0.25–$0.35 per kWh.
Example (at $0.30 per kWh):
-
Cost per hour: about $0.69
-
6-hour firing: about $4.14
-
8-hour firing: about $5.52
A typical firing usually costs around $4–$6 in electricity.
Does the kiln use full power the whole time?
No. The kiln uses maximum power mainly during heat-up. As it approaches the target temperature, the controller cycles the heating elements on and off to maintain the temperature. Because of this, the average power consumption is usually lower than the maximum rating.
Does firing temperature affect electricity cost?
Yes. Higher temperatures and longer firing schedules use more electricity.
For example, firing to higher ceramic temperatures or running extended hold times will increase total energy usage.
